The sacred city of Lhasa is where the Lhasa, who hails from Tibet, gets his name. The Lhasa was bred solely by royalty and monks in monasteries for hundreds of years to serve as an inside guard and protector. Abso Seng Kye, which translates to “Bark Lion Sentinel Dog,” is his name in his native country. The breed’s history has been documented since 800 B.C. A Lhasa was seen as lucky, but it was practically impossible to purchase one because he served as a sacred guardian in temples and monasteries. The Dalai Lama delivered Lhasas to the Chinese Emperor and members of the Imperial family as sacred presents from the commencement of the Manchu Dynasty in 1583 until as recently as 1908. The Lhasas were always given in pairs and were believed to bring riches and luck.

The 13th Dalai Lama presented the renowned global explorer and naturalist C. Suydam Cutting with the first Lhasas to enter the United States directly in 1933 as presents. The two dogs that Cutting received as gifts served as the seed stock for his kennel, Hamilton Farm, which was located in Gladstone, New Jersey.

The Lhasa Apso was recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1935.
