Leonberger Dog  History

Germany’s Leonberg is where the Leonberger dog breed was first developed. A guy by the name of Heinrich Essig allegedly repeatedly bred a Landseer Newfoundland with a St. Bernard, then crossed the progeny with a Pyrenean mountain dog. Although there are no surviving written records, it is currently thought that early Leonbergers were crossed with other dog breeds. The dog was bred to look like the lion on Leonberg’s coat of arms. In the royal and imperial households of France, Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Italy, the breed gained popularity.

In 1891, Leonberger breeders founded the first clubs for the breed. They were common agricultural dogs that pulled carts. In both World Wars, they were also employed to pull carts carrying ammunition. During World War I, the breed was on the verge of extinction but was saved by a handful of enthusiasts.

In the early 1900s, the Leonberger first arrived in the United States and Canada. The Canadian government brought them in to serve as water rescue dogs. During the Great Depression, the breed declined in the United States. Leonbergers have become more prevalent over time, first in Europe and then in the United States. Although the Leonberger Club of America was established in 1985, it wasn’t until 2010 that the breed was formally accepted into the AKC working group.
