On the Balearic island of Ibiza, the Ibizan Hound was originally developed to hunt rabbits and small game. In Spain and internationally, the Ibizan Hound dog breed is still employed in this purpose. Ibizan Hound dog History
One of the artifacts discovered within King Tut’s tomb in 1922 was a life-size statue of the jackal god Anubis, the Watchdog of the Dead, whose likeness to the current Ibizan Hound was startling. The carvings and other pharaonic artifacts imply that dogs like the Ibizan Hound have been around for 5,000 years, making them one of the most ancient forms of canines. But it turns out that hypothesis is probably incorrect. Genetic studies have revealed that the modern-day Ibizan and his cousin, the Pharaoh Hound, are recent reconstructions of an ancient type and do not have a genealogy dating back thousands of years.
Aside from the Ibizan’s age, how did this breed come up on the Spanish island of Ibiza, from whence he gets his name? In the 8th or 9th century BCE, the Phoenicians, the most daring and well-traveled traders of the day, may have carried him there. On Ibiza, the agile and quick-footed hound navigated rugged terrain in search of his prey, rabbits and hares, using his keen vision and hearing.
The tough life of Ibizans on their Spanish island trained them to hunt with skill, persistence, and patience. They could have remained unknown had it not been for the importation of a pair, Hannibal and Certera, to Rhode Island in 1956 by Colonel and Mrs. Consuelo Seoane. They had the first American litter of eight puppies, which created the foundation of the breed in the United States, along with several subsequent imports.
The American Kennel Club recognized the Ibizan Hound in 1979, and it first appeared at the Westminster Kennel Club show in 1980. He is still a rare breed today. The AKC recognizes 138 breeds and types, with the Ibizan Hound ranking 138th.
