Greater Swiss Mountain Dog History
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is one of the oldest dog breeds in Switzerland. The Swissy was once regarded to be one of the most popular breeds in Switzerland. However, by the 1900s, their numbers had declined, most likely due to other dog breeds or technology taking over their customary work on Swiss farms.
Since then, the popularity of the breed has expanded slowly but gradually. The first Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs were introduced to the United States in 1968, and the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club of America was created soon after. The Swissy was accepted into the American Kennel Club’s Working Group in 1995.
