Gordon Setter dog History

Black and tan setting dogs were recognized in Scotland as early as 1620, but it wasn’t until the fourth Duke of Gordon’s kennels 200 years later that they rose to prominence. The Castle Gordon Setters were both excellent hunters and stunningly attractive. It was said of them: “They are not fast dogs, but they have excellent endurance and can run continuously from morning to night. Their noses are first-rate, and they rarely make a mistake. You can tell there are birds when they stand.”

The early Gordons also came in red, tricolor, and black and white, but the Duke was believed to prefer the black and tan dogs, so that’s what has predominated over time. The Duke of Richmond, the deceased Duke’s heir, continued the kennels after his death in 1827. In its studbook, the English Kennel Club recorded 126 Black and Tan setters between 1859 and 1874. A Black and Tan Setter by the name of Dandie, who could trace his ancestry back to the kennels of the Duke of Gordon, won first place for setters at the first official dog show in June 1859. In 1924, the breed’s name was changed to Gordon Setter.

The first Gordon Setters imported into the United States came from Gordon Castle’s kennel. Daniel Webster and George Blunt bought the dogs, Rake and Rachel, in 1842. They established the breed in the United States.
